Lughnasadh (also known as Lammas in England) is a Gaelic harvest festival traditionally celebrated around August 1st, marking the beginning of the harvest season and named for the Celtic god Lugh. In the UK, it has roots particularly in Ireland and Scotland, historically marked by community gatherings, hilltop assemblies, harvest games, handfasting ceremonies (trial marriages), the baking of the first bread from the new grain, and offerings of the first fruits of the harvest to ensure a bountiful season. While its ancient Celtic and pre-Christian observances faded over centuries, many of its customs were absorbed into the Christian festival of Lammas (from “loaf mass”), where bread baked from the first wheat harvest was blessed in churches. Today, Lughnasadh has seen a revival among modern Pagan and Wiccan communities across the UK, who mark it with rituals, feasts, and gatherings that honor the turning of the agricultural year and the themes of gratitude, abundance, and the first harvest.
